It's Not a Phase, Mom

It's Not a Phase, Mom

A list by Madison, Creative Media & Branding Specialist

Dear diary:

Mood: Apathetic.

I grew up under the "Black Parade," belting out emo lyrics like they were the anthem for my soul. If you remember the thrill of hearing "Sugar, We're Goin Down" for the first time or felt every beat of "Numb" echo through your bones, then you know the emo era wasn't just music; it was a lifestyle. From smudged eyeliner to changing out my MySpace playlist, emo was where my feelings lived out loud.

Get ready to be swept away in a whirlwind of nostalgia. Grab your old band tees, turn up the volume, and let’s relive the emo movement in the pages of these unforgettable reads. Because "I'm Not Ok (I Promise)," but that's exactly the point.

Okay, okay... I know that Blink-182 is not technically emo, but it is emo adjacent. Did you not feel the emotion when Mark Hoppus belted, "WHERE ARE YOUUUUU?!" Cue nostalgic memories of breakups in high school and nothing is more emo than a breakup.

Another somewhat funny pick for this list. He may not be emo, but I think to better understand the emo movement, it is important to learn what also was happening the same time in other musical genres. Also this memoir on audio is fantastic in my opinion.
