Have You Seen...? Movies And Films You May Need To See
In addition to reading like words are oxygen, I love a good motion picture. Blockbusters and quiet films that entertain and enlighten. Fortunately, the library has me (and you) covered. From classic titles to lesser know ones, these are worth the watch.
Set in the 1930s, while the Great Depression is in full swing, a socialite tries to bring a "forgotten man" from the city dump back to a party as part of a scavenger hunt. When he rebuffs her, but accepts her sister's more respectful version of the same request, he finds himself both helping her win, and with a new job. A subtly funny and sharp look at how the other half lives and how wealth can't buy humanity.
Harvey is a happy man, an alcoholic with what most people identify as a hallucination of a large rabbit. His sister wants to get him commited, but not everyone thinks he's mentally ill. A film about perception, reality, and whether it's better to be clever or kind.
If you enjoy the film, you might also enjoy John Green's essay on it in his book, The Anthropocene Reviewed.
In this lesser known Disney classic, three children from London are sent to a small English village to protect them during the Blitz. Their guardian, Eglantine Price, is an apprentice witch. When instead of the last spell in her correspondence course, she receives only her broom, she and the children begin an adventure that will lead them farther afield than any of them supposed. This musical, featuring Angela Lansbury, is a charmer.
Say you and a friend went hunting in the Scottish Highlands and discovered a village that no one had seen in a hundred years. This most peculiar occurrence leads to a whirlwind romance, a lot of singing and dancing, and an ending fit for Bonnie Jean.
