Graphic Fantastic: Graphic Novels for the Young and Young at Heart

A list by Rachael, Page

Comics and graphic novels continue to fight against their reputation as lesser reading material. The books on this list are my defense for their inclusion in the reading diet of every reader. Keep in mind, not every book is for every reader. If any of these or any other books are not for you, you don't have to finish them.

Books

First in the series, this starkly beautiful, mysteriously mild, dark manga-stye graphic novel tells the story of a monster and a little girl.       To say more would spoil it. Definitely a good read for teen and adult readers who like their fantasy to unfold slowly.

A young girl discovers a portal into space through which she goes to rescue her best friend. First in a series.

When a group of unlikely team mates get together to build a robot capable of winning a Bot Wars-style competition, the unexpected occurs.

YA, but as far as I remember, not too YA.

In a world where conformity reigns, a single hair on a man's chin begins a major paradigm shift. Funny and thoughtful, deeper than you might expect, and good for readers 12 and up.

If you've heard about the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" revival coming up, this graphic novel written by James Marsters, aka Spike, might be right up your alley. A pair of boots in need of repair, a monster terrorizing a community, and hidden treasure make this a delightful book for fans of the T.V. series, and fans of vampires in general. Definitely for teenagers and up, due to some violence and very vivid monsters.
