Kill A Watt Energy Meter
Identifying the Energy Hogs in Your Home or Business is as Easy as 1...2...3!
You may be surprised to find out you are spending over $15.00 a month on that old refrigerator in the garage.
If so, ask yourself:
"Is it worth it just to keep that six-pack cold?"
Plug the Kill A Watt unit into the wall & plug any one household electrical appliance into the Kill A Watt. Do not use a power strip with several appliances, the Kill AWatt has a maximum load capacity of 1875 Watts. The unit will start to accumulate kWh (Kilowatt hours) and powered duration time (hour) after power is applied.
1. Press Volt key for Voltage (Volts) display.
2. Press Amp key for current (Amps) display.
3. Press the kWh/Hour key to display the cumulative energy consumption since power was applied to the unit.
4. Consumption will be displayed in kWh (from 0.01 kWh to 999 kWh). To reset, remove power from unit momentarily.
5. Multiply your kWh times your rate (Example 50 kWh x .08 (8 cents/kWh) = $4.00
Formulas:
Amps x Volts = Watts
Watts ÷ 1000 = kW
kW x Time (Hours) = kWh
kWh x Rate = Cost (Contact your utility provider for actual rate information)
NOTE:
Some items, like a lamp, draw electricity at a constant rate. Other appliances, like a refrigerator, draw electricity on a variable rate as their compressor cycles on and off throughout the day.
Appliance with a constant draw can be monitored for one hour then multiplied by the number of hours of normal use to determine a daily or month cost.
Appliances that draw electricity on a variable rate should be monitored for a full 24-hour time period to gain an accurate daily kWh usage.
