A bookmobile stops at a mobile home community offering books and a chance to make some “funny” food – a peanut butter sandwich with gummy bugs. The children line up.It starts to rain. The bookmobile driver comes out with umbrellas to hold over the children but doesn’t have shoes for those with barefeet. The children take the food and ask for more.
Children are trapped by circumstance. They grow where they are planted. Some with barefeet, little food, and no umbrella for when it rains. How can books and the gift of reading be important to children with so many basic needs? When we provide an event bringing free books, food, and a story with flannel-board activities and play time, we provide a shelter for their hopes, their imaginations, and their minds. The tool of language and literacy is an umbrella that all children can have as their own, no matter where they find themselves.
Through reading, you and your child can learn about the wider world of children’s experience.Check out the books below to learn about the lives of children that may be very different (yet fundamentally the same) as your own.

Sophie is waaaay into older books and memorizes them after just 2 exposures. I'm really in trouble. She is, however, also enjoying jell-o bats these days. One day she'll be old enough to sleep like one!
